Definition

Hirsutism (HER-soot-iz-um) is a condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women. Hirsutism results in excessive amounts of coarse and pigmented hair on body areas where men typically grow hair — face, chest and back. When excessively high androgen levels cause hirsutism, other signs may develop over time, a process called virilization.

The amount of body hair you have is largely determined by your genetic makeup. Hirsutism may arise from excess male hormones called androgens, primarily testosterone, or hirsutism may be due to an ethnic or family trait. By Mayo Clinic staff

Sometime with no explanatory reason, except for heredity, ethnic groups as to women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian ancestry, may experience some disorder http://bit.ly/Y5VhJL.

Hirsutism can be very stressful. Women, are generally speaking, self-conscious and disturbed, say emotionally as well as physically by excess of unwanted hair. Although there is no further physical complication, the underlying cause must be explored.

A combination of self-care and medical therapies provides effective treatment for many women with hirsutism.

Hirsutism is not to be confused by women in menopause or early sign of menopause with increased coarse chin or unwanted facial hair. Medication may also be the culprit of such event of unwanted hair. Your doctor and your electrologist will provide the help you need to differentiate the cause.

Test and diagnosis

Making a diagnosis of hirsutism begins with discussing your medical history. Your doctor may ask you about your menstrual cycles, the time of onset of your symptoms, whether you are taking any medications, and whether you have a family history of certain conditions. By Mayo Clinic staff

It is best to leave some hair growth (2 to 3 days) leading to your appointment. Your physician will be best served to determinate your hair growth pattern and guide you on a treatment plan.
