Washing our face seems like the least complicated part of our beauty routine. It turns out though that some common lathering habits can cause a whole list of skin woes, including dryness, irritation, oiliness and breakouts.

We put together a few steps to follow for better and more effective cleansing.

*Start by washing your hands first- you don’t want to transfer all the germs and bacteria to your face.

* Avoid ordinary bar soaps and stick with facial cleansers that are gentle and designed for your skin type.

*Pick the right product to cleanse your face. The right cleanser should completely remove dirt, makeup, and grime, but not strip away too much of your skin’s natural oils or healthy cells. If your skin is oily, you’ll want a cleanser that has a low pH level, which will be more effective in cleaning the oil. If you have sensitive skin, you won’t want the cleansers that are full of chemicals.

*If you wear eye makeup, make sure you remove it first with an eye makeup remover.

*Wet your face first and wash in circular motion for 30sec-1min to give the product time to work properly.

*Wash with warm water, not hot. While hot water may feel good on your skin, it can interfere with your skin’s natural, protective oils and lead to over-drying or over production of sebum. Lukewarm water is the best bet to cleanse gently yet effectively.

*Rinse thoroughly with cool water, never with water that is too hot or too cold. Extremes in temperature may irritate your skin and cause damage. Skimping on rinsing leads to residue build-up, which can clog pores and dry out skin. The jawline, hairline, and nose are the most commonly neglected spots, so show them some love!

*Pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Don’t scrub your face dry, be gentle. The skin on your face is sensitive. Make sure that the towel is clean, otherwise you’ll be transferring bacteria to your clean face.

*Exfoliate two-three times a week. Gentle exfoliation buffs away dead cells on your face resulting in smoother, brighter skin. Just like a cleanser, make sure to find a scrub that’s suitable for your skin type.

*Apply toner only if you have oily skin, otherwise you can skip this step.

*To maximize absorption and help seal in moisture, apply moisturizers immediately after cleansing while skin is still damp. The same goes for serums and special treatment products. Waiting until your skin is completely dry will make it harder for the active ingredients to sink into your skin and can cause skin to feel greasy or tacky.

The skin on our face is different than the skin on the rest of our body, so it requires different treatment. It’s also the skin that everyone notices the most, so why not take good care of it?

At Hairless NYC Electrolysis Clinic, we do offer some of the best cleansers and moisturizers for both dry and oily skin, from Skinceuticals. They are gentle, fragrance free products that leave the skin fresh and clean without excessive dryness or oiliness.
