Electrolysis is the process by which the electrologist first gently slides a probe along the hair follicle without any discomfort for the client. Once the probe is correctly inserted down the base of the follicle the electrologist applies the current which destroys the dermal of cells and coagulates the capillary vessels that feed them. The last step is to remove the hair. There should be no resistance.

In 1875 Dr. Charles Michel, a St. Louis ophthalmologist, devised this system to remove his patients’ painful ingrown eyelashes. He began using a battery-powered needle epilator to treat them in 1869. This direct current–powered method was called electrolysis because a chemical reaction in the hair follicle causes sodium hydroxide to form, and prevents the follicle from producing another hair. After perfecting his technique on eyelashes, Doctor Michel tried his hand at cosmetic surgery by applying it to eyebrows – hence Electrolysis was adopted for Non Medical use.

Another treatment being developed in the 1920s was thermolysis. In this method, a high frequency alternating current was passed through a probe inserted into the follicle and the heat produced as the microwave current interacted with moisture in the follicle killed the hair.

In 1938 an electrologist, Henri St. Pierre and an engineer, Arthur Hinkel of the General Electric Company, developed a method which combined both techniques. Appropriately, they called this method blend. Their idea was to combine the speed of thermolysis with the effectiveness of electrolysis – something that had remained wishful thinking until advances in electronics made the idea feasible in the late 1930s and practical in the 1940s.

From these early attempts to rid people of unwanted hair, there has been continued medical research and development that has made electrolysis both a safe and reliable method of treatment. Today, the American Medical Association and the Federal Drug Administration recognize Electrolysis as a safe and permanent method of hair removal.

Thanks to modern technology, electrolysis devices have revolutionized permanent hair removal treatments. Their creators have designed a state-of-the-art computerized electrolysis machine that limits the level of destruction within the hair follicle, targeting only germ cells. This consequently protects the skin and prevents new hair growth. It allows maximum comfort and reduces number of treatments necessary to permanently destroy hair follicles. They permanently and rapidly eliminate all hair types of any color.
Because they work twice as fast as any other epilator, the cells responsible for hair growth are more rapidly coagulated, resulting in incomparable effectiveness.

Since it’s origins in 1875, electrolysis like most technologies has changed dramatically. Today’s epilators are essentially microprocessors that deliver bursts of energy measured in thousandths of a second, to eliminate hair. Electrologists can modulate both time and intensity of their epilator settings to match all clients’ tolerance levels. Speed and comfort are synonymous with modern electrolysis
